Activities

In the past months, the FF-SIG has promoted the following activities:

1. Coordination and maintenance of the web site.

2. Research seminar during the last " 3rd International Conference on Forest Fire Research" held in Luso (Coimbra, Portugal, 1998). The seminar was attended by over 30 representatives, from Greece, United Kingdom, Italy, France, Portugal, USA and Spain. The meeting was a good opportunity to review current state of research in fire risk estimation, fire detection and fire effects assessment. (Click here for an extended report on this seminar).

3. Organization of the "3rd International Workshop on Remote Sensing and GIS Applications to Forest Fire Management. New methods and sensors", held in Paris (France), 17-18 May, 2001 (Click here for more information about this workshop).

4. Organization of the "4th International Workshop on Remote Sensing and GIS Applications to Forest Fire Management. Innovative Concepts and Methods in Fire Danger Estimation" held in Ghent (Belgium), on 5-7 June 2003, in cooperation with the GOFC/GOLD-Fire (More information).

5. Organization of the "5th International Workshop on Remote Sensing and GIS Applications to Forest Fire Management. Fire Effects Assessment" held in Zaragoza (Spain), on 16-18 June 2005, in cooperation with the Zaragoza University (More information).

6. Organization of the "6th International Workshop of the EARSeL Special Interest Group (SIG) on Forest Fires", that will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece from 27 - 29 September 2007. The main subject of the workshop will be the operational use of remote sensing in forest fire management. The workshop is organised by the Laboratory of Forest Management and Remote Sensing, Faculty of Forestry and Natural Environment, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in collaboration with the University of Alcalá and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (More information).

7. Organization of the "7th International Workshop of the EARSeL Special Interest Group on Forest Fires". This next workshop will take place in Matera (Italy) from 2 to 5 September 2009.The keynote lectures will deal with the following topics: climate change and forest fire, sensors and measurements for fire monitoring, advanced data processing methods and data interpretation, natural hazard and forest fire.

Objetives

The basic activity of the Forest Fire Special Interest Group (FF-SIG) is to establish personal contacts among researchers interested in the application of Remote Sensing and GIS technologies to forest fire research. We plan to foster communication among members, by maintaining a web site where project results and papers can be disseminated, and personal links between researchers and student mobility be promoted. Periodic seminars and workshops will also be organized
